Who’s Terry?
OUR STORY
Where Terry came from…
Our story begins in 1767 with the opening of a shop in York, England. York locals could find lemon and orange candied peel among other confectionary. Many years later in 1823, Joseph Terry joined the company and invented new lines of confectionery, candied peel, marmalade and…you guessed it – chocolate! The company would later be passed through the family, becoming Joseph Terry and Sons Ltd.
Did you know that the first Terry’s product was actually a chocolate apple?
The brand was originally named Terry’s Chocolate Apple and for a few years, there were no chocolate oranges in sight! But do you know what an apple doesn’t have? Segments! In 1932, the whackable, segmentable Terry’s Chocolate Orange was born and so was the tradition, revolutionising the chocolate industry and becoming an immediate hit.
Production comes to a halt
When World War II began, non-essential production like confectionary was stopped across England. The York factory became a shadow factory, aiding the war effort by creating and repairing aircraft propellor blades. Once the war was over, the factory returned to creating delicious confectionary.
Terry-bly tasty innovations
In the following decades, Terry’s has made many more exciting and inventive products, expanding into new formats and thinking outside the ball. Among others, we’ve made our Segsations, a sharing bag of delicious individually wrapped chocolate orange segments, we raised the bar and made a snappable Terry’s Chocolate Orange Sharing Bar, and we made some truly banging chocolate when we cooked up our Exploding Candy Minis. And it doesn’t stop there!
It was mint to be
There was a lot of excite-mint when we launched the moreishly minty sibling to our Terry’s Chocolate Orange in 2023, moving beyond our iconic orange flavour for the first time! Made with the same delicious milk chocolate, but with an added natural mint flavour, Terry’s Chocolate Mint is the coolest addition to Terry’s trove.
More than 250 years of Terry-fic tastes!
It’s been more than 250 years since that shop opened in York, and we are proud to continue the Terry’s name. We won’t stop making Terry-fic new treats so keep your eyes peeled…
